Google is Closing its Tempe Engineering Office
Google is closing its engineering center in Tempe, Arizona, two years after it opened because the work was too "fragmented," according to the VP of Engineering and Research at Google, Alan Eustace. Eustace had posted the reason for closing the office on Google's company blog.
Eustace wrote, "...despite everyone's best efforts, the projects our engineers have been working on in Arizona have been, and remain, highly fragmented. So after a lot of soul searching we have decided to incorporate work on these projects into teams elsewhere at Google. We will therefore be closing our Arizona office on November 21, 2008."
The office in Tempe was part of Google's strategy to take advantage of local talent by opening engineering centers across the U.S, "developing local centers that give engineers the autonomy and opportunity to be truly innovative." The team at Google has resigned themselves to the fact that the model was not working for them. The Tempe office had 50 employees which will be relocated to other Google offices.
John Laub is the Chairman of the Phoenix CEO-CFO Group.
