Winning In This Economy - As American as Baseball

Josh Byrnes, Executive Vice President of the Arizona Diamondbacks knows a thing or two about winning. After winning the division and reaching the National League Championship Series in recent years, he's applying the same winning strategies he used then to manage his organization through the challenges of the new economy.

In his inspirational speech at a recent gathering of CEOs sponsored by the Phoenix CEO-CFO Group and Jackie Bassett of BT Industrials, he inspired the audience to apply his strategies to their own businesses.

  • Set a strategy for the long term not just for today's game
Susan Cordts of Adaptive Technologies discussed how to use predictive modeling to create actionable intelligence in executing strategy. Tom McKinley of EKM Holdings reminded us all that strategy begins with what customers want.
  • Measure the metrics that matter
Michael Swiszcz of RSM McGladrey told the audience about the value of having better visibility into a company's financials. Dirk Karsten Beth of Mission3 shared insights on "silo smashing" while at the same time reducing costs in the ondemand market.
  • Build the right team with a mix of veteran and new talent
Veteran talent from Arizona's leading businessmen such as Mike King of Gammage & Burnham were there to offer their sage to self-funding entrepreneurs; Brett Owens of Chrometa and Dave Rice of True Cloud.
  • Always be looking for your competitive advantage as markets go through cycles.
Marcy Maslov of e-Factor! showed us how trust and integrity can build customer confidence as a competitive differentiator. Bob Daquilante of Accram shared his own secrets to sales success in the highly competitive computer services market.
  • Provide leadership and stability
Kim Marie Branch-Pettid of LeTip International told her own amazing success story that spanned over thirty years of economic cycles.

With many CEOs in attendance, a few of the A Team that came ready to play were:

Lori Coruccini of Predix - Know Your Talents, Doug Bruhnke of GrowthNation, Marty Nason of B2B CFO and Peter Frenette of Sun Valley Group.

Today's global economic challenges are the World Series of entrepreneurship. We can't sit back and let the government manage the economy to success. It's up to each and every one of us to get a glove and get in the game. We are the world leaders when it comes to innovation and entrepreneurship. To us, winning in this economy is as American as baseball.
